Threat
Can the animal force damage or make the opponent respect its attack range?
Patch 0.21.772 · editorial ranking
All 21 public-branch playables ranked by adult solo encounter power on Gateway. This is a matchup tool—not a beginner list, growth-speed list, or promise that one animal always beats another.
Higher tiers can more reliably start, deny, reset, or finish a fight without requiring a coordinated group. Growth difficulty, nesting value, and pure travel safety are discussed separately so they do not distort the ranking.
Can the animal force damage or make the opponent respect its attack range?
How well does the kit survive one missed attack, bad turn, or unexpected third party?
Can it disengage, recover stamina, and choose a better second exchange?
How often does Gateway offer the space, cover, water, or vertical route the kit needs?
Species, player skill, terrain, stamina, growth, injuries, mutations, group size, and server rules can reverse an individual matchup. The placement reason below tells you what must be true for the rank to make sense.
Can end or deny an adult solo encounter from a position of strength. Each still has a terrain or matchup condition that matters.
CarnivoreCrush, fracture pressure, ambush speed, and apex mass make a clean close-range opening decisive.
HerbivoreFrontal control and apex durability make direct approaches costly; flanks and stamina remain the real test.
HerbivoreTail coverage can deny an approach lane and punish a single positioning error with very high consequences.
CarnivoreAt a shoreline it chooses when the fight begins. Long overland movement removes most of that control.
Reliable kits, meaningful pressure, and enough control to function without a coordinated group.
CarnivoreClaw Swipe and Pounce create heavy bleed pressure, but failed commitments expose stamina and position.
CarnivoreA durable carcass controller and close-range bruiser that thrives in messy, sustained contests.
CarnivoreOpen-ground speed and headbutt pressure are excellent; dense terrain and tight turns break its plan.
HerbivoreStrong frontal threat and stability give it dependable solo space control without apex size.
HerbivoreReflection damage and defensive stance punish careless contact, especially around its protected arcs.
HerbivoreA flexible defensive kit, useful mobility, and reliable punish tools make it one of the safest all-rounders.
Strong when the player creates the right range, time of day, terrain, or first hit. Less forgiving when the plan breaks.
CarnivoreVenom and night pressure can turn a patient hunt, but daylight and failed setup lower its consistency.
CarnivoreAgile and dangerous, yet solo pounce commitments are much easier to punish than coordinated pack pressure.
CarnivoreClimbing creates unique ambush and escape routes; flat open ground removes much of its advantage.
CarnivoreWater mobility, pounce, and spearfishing create a flexible shoreline hunter; placement remains provisional.
HerbivoreGood movement and defensive options keep it credible alone, while a herd raises its practical ceiling.
Can survive or create a narrow threat, but solo combat pressure depends heavily on a pack, an escape lane, or a specific environment.
CarnivoreVenom is built around coordinated repetitions. A lone Troodon has little room for missed pounces or trades.
OmnivoreExcellent speed lets it refuse many fights, but it has limited power to force a healthy adult matchup.
CarnivoreFlight gives unmatched route choice and survival access; grounded fighting remains fragile and avoidable.
OmnivoreWater escape and flexible feeding support survival, while direct adult combat pressure stays narrow.
Designed to avoid bad fights rather than control equal adult matchups. Low combat rank does not mean a poor survival experience.
These are the placements most likely to be misread if the environment or group size is ignored.
The shoreline is part of the kit. Rank it separately from a forced land crossing.
Venom pressure scales with clean rotations and teammates who do not waste pounce windows.
This board scores encounter control. Flight makes survival and scouting far stronger than the combat letter suggests.
Patch 0.21.772 added the species, so live matchups and counterplay still need more public-branch time.
